It seems that many Icelanders believe it is better to see the Northern Lights when it is cold outside. Is it a big misunderstanding??
The Northern Ligths Center at Grandi in Reykjavik brings you the truth about this spectacular and popular phenomena.
People might think it is strange to have a Northern Lights Center when you can actually see the northern lights outside when it is dark and partly clear sky. However the Center offers much more than that.
We visited the center and than had the privilege to ask the owners Grétar and Hörður few questions. Do you want to know more about how to catch the northern lights on photo and the science behind them? Than continue to read…
The business idea started to evolve in 2012
The idea is mainly from Hörður, he has been and is working as a Northern Lights guide and photographer. He saw that there where something missing from the Northern Lights tourist industry, something to inform people what this phenomena is and how it can look like. Hörður contacted Grétar in the middle of the year 2012 and explained his idea and asked if he could have his eyes open for suitable house in Reykjavík. Grétar liked this idea and started to look for suitable house in Reykjavík and in December 2012 he came to this well located and suitable facility.
Rental agreement was made in February 2013 and the work started in the beginning of March and the Northern Lights Center was opened at June 8th 2013. In the building period we added two other friends, to the company, that helped us out financially and also with the development of the idea.
The big misunderstanding among Icelanders
Almost everyone that visit the center are tourist and therefore everything is in English, and we also offer translation in Spanish, Chinese and soon in French and German.
_ Our plan is to offer Icelandic school group to visit us as well, because we know that there is a big misunderstanding among the Icelandic nation about this phenomena. Many Icelanders think that it is better to see the Northern Lights when it is cold outside.
The company is privately owned and hasn´t received any grants. We are in cooperation with several tour operators and companies in the tourist industry, such as Icelandair, Special tours, Gateway to Iceland and more.
Old stories and myths
First we offer some old stories and myths from different countries where you can see the Northern Lights; what people thought of them in the old days. Then we explain the science behind them, how the plasma travels from the sun and how the magnetic field effects them and why it is only around the Northern and Southern poles. After that you can enter a room with Northern Lights time-lapse video on 7 meters wide screen. We also offer the Icelandic Northern Lights forecast, show you how to setup your camera to be able to catch a Northern Lights photo and at the end we have a gift store where you can have free coffee and tea.
Terrific gift store and great design
The Northern Lights Center is designed mostly by its owners and their friends. When we designed the gift store we got help from our friends in the company Refoundery, Snorri Valdimarsson helped us with the design of the layout, our carpenters helped us out with desks and more and Ólafur Haraldsson helped us with all the videos and interactive displays. The Northern Lights Center is definitely a place worth visiting to explore, learn and discover the northern lights.
